Documentation is very important .....

Once i was travelling by train from Mumbai to Delhi! When the train started, I was traveling alone in the AC-I coupe. Some time later, a Beautiful lady came and sat in the opposite berth! I was pleasantly Happy🙂 The lady kept smiling at me... This made me even more Happy☺ Then she went and sat next to me.... I was bubbling with Joy😊😍🤗 She then leant towards me and whispered in my ear... *"Hand over all your cash, cards and mobile phone to me , else I will shout loudly and tell everybody that you are harassing and misbehaving with me" * I stared blankly at her 🙄 I took out a paper and a pen from my bag and wrote " I am sorry, I can not hear or speak... Please write on this paper whatever you want to say" The lady wrote everything what she said earlier and gave it to me! I took her note, kept it nicely in my pocket... I got up and told her in clear tones..." *Now shout & scream !!* Moral of the story : *DOCUMENTATION IS VERY IMPORTANT*

Can we protect our Privacy from those smart assistants????

Well, that’s a human behavior dilemma. We are very much concern about our Privacy. But on the other side, we almost love having digital companion in our homes. We love them to work for us and handle our innocuous tasks.

But are we sure that there is no one listening our conversation??

A bunch of recent reports confirmed that we are breached. Our conversations with these smart devices are analyzed by humans. Isn’t it scary?

Although US west coast top shot companies have publicly announced that only 1% of recordings were subject to human review but it looks vague to me. Even though Artificial Intelligence is claimed to be involved in this process but humans need to interface to understand the nuances of human speech, patterns, culture and environment.

But there is a good news too. These top shot companies are seriously working on Privacy controls, not only to make customers happy, be transparent but also to prevent themselves from super heavy fines from GDPR.

There are other things that we can do. Delete recordings on regular basis, turning sensors off could be a few of them.

So enjoy the technology but keep your eyes on.

Are we safe online ??

The internet processes so much information that it’s impossible to map. YouTube uploads 500 hours of new content every minute; Google processes 3.8 million searches per minute; Facebook has 2.32 billion users (as of the end of 2018). The numbers are fun bits of trivia and yet so large that our brains can think of them only in the abstract.

Alexa - One stop shop

At least once a week, my older kid asks me how my day was and what I did at work or, more generally, what I do at work. My answer to him is generally along the lines of “I am a Privacy Program Manager, helping my colleagues determine what personal information we should be collecting for apps, services and websites; how we should and shouldn’t be using that information; how we help people using those things understand what we’re doing and the choices available to them; how we are validating the Privacy and making the product as Privacy compliance.” As someone who has been working in technology for more than 19 years and privacy for roughly 3, I was surprised when Alexa emerged as a concrete way for me to explain my work to my kid.

Privacy, Data and beyond

The privacy is at the intersection of law, technology and policies. Online data is becoming the oxygen for the new products/services. There is no doubt civilization is at a crossroads in IT, including social media, data, privacy and hacking. The brainchild of the 20th century is maturing and with maturity, comes the abuse and bad habits.

The organizations relationship with their users are built on trust - trust that the data they provide to them will be used only in the ways they understand and expect. So its our responsibility to maintain the end user trust and don't make our customers as "products". Organizations should share the vision but sell the reality.

The reality of GDPR compliance

  • Just over one-third, or 34.5%, of surveyed professionals working to ensure their organizations are fully compliant with the European Union's new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rules report achieving compliance, according to a new study by Deloitte. By the end of 2018, 32.7% hope to be compliant and 11.7% are taking a "wait and see" approach.
  • Among respondents, 13.6% expressed confidence that their organizations know what data third parties have and are using artificial intelligence or other technology to manage contracts for GDPR compliance. More than half, or 56%, haven't finished uncovering what data third parties have or the implications of GDPR on third-party contract management, while 10.2% haven't started addressing compliance.
  • Under GDPR, 30.6% expect discovery to be more difficult for their organizations, 18.6% expect legal discovery to become easier and 17.2% expect no change. When it comes to scalability, 48.2% said their data privacy programs were scalable to address similar rules in other areas, while 19.8% say their efforts are GDPR-focused and not scalable.

So you think you can secure your mobile phone with a fingerprint?

No two people are believed to have identical fingerprints, but researchers have found that partial similarities between prints are common enough that the fingerprint-based security systems used in electronic devices can be more vulnerable than previously thought. The vulnerability lies in the fact that fingerprint-based authentication systems feature small sensors that store partial fingerprints. The researchers found there could be enough similarities among different people's partial prints that one could create a 'MasterPrint.'
